Revolver in 22LR or 17HMR?
Looking for a revolver in 22LR as a non-jamming trainer pistol for my wife and daughter (and I really want one too). I've spent some time looking and have favored the .22 as I already have a .22 rifle. However, the deals I'm finding on the 17s are great. I also have no idea if there is a difference between 17 HMR and 17 Mach 2. Somebody school me.
As far as maker goes, Taurus seems to be the only maker out there really pushing these smaller calibers in a revolver. I am not brand loyal so if you have a suggestion, let me know. |

The advantages: higher velocity, flatter shooting, more effective on varmints, better accuracy, low noise (rifle). Disadvantages: cost, ammo availability Also, will it remain popular or eventually fade away? Seems like every gunmaker has jumped on the bandwagon and that has made for a bit of a saturated market, IMO...hence the better deals. I have never shot a 17 HMR pistol, but I bet it would be a louder than a 22LR for training...might intimidate a new shooter...the 17 Mach2 might be okay, though. You might be better served with the 22LR (cheaper) for a revolver and save the 17(HMR) for rifle shooting, IMO. Re: Revolver in 22LR or 17HMR?
While I've heard nothing but good things about the .17, the ammo is more expensive, and there's just no negatives with the .22lr. Abundance of ammo, cheap to shoot, everyone else has at least one. What is it, two boxes of 50 rounds of .17 for the price of a brick of 525 or 550 .22? No brainer for me!

Re: Revolver in 22LR or 17HMR?
Great info SilverCity. Seeing as I already have a rifle in .22LR I think I'll look for a pistol in the same ammo. I like the idea of going to a 17 HMR rifle for varmint.
I have not seen prices for the 17 HMR ammo but I usually see quality 17 mach 2 for about $3 per 50 rounds. Now the question is, Who makes a good .22 revolver? I think I keep defaulting back to the Taurus based on price and the 8-9 round cylinder. Any further thoughts? |
Re: Revolver in 22LR or 17HMR?
S&W makes a real nice 22lr revolver. Just be willing to pony up about $500 to $600. May dad has one and is just an awsome fun gun to shoot and teach with.

Re: Revolver in 22LR or 17HMR?
I've always thought that .17 cal. firearms were a solution in search of a problem. I've just never understood the overall advantages over .22 LR, beside higher velocity.
Also, if you're in the market for a 22 revolver, it might be worth the extra FRNs to find one that has an extra cylinder chambered for .22 mag. |

Ag_man. Sounds like a good idea. Any makers you know of that do that?
Silvercity. I did some checking and I agree with you on the 17HMR. That's a nice round. The pistol is my first order of business but I'll be coming back to the 17. |
Re: Revolver in 22LR or 17HMR?
a 22 lr revolver is a sweet survival piece. I mean its the cheapest ammo in the world, basically, small and you can store a ton and never worry about reloading.
17 wmr or whatever, thats a fancy round, for enthusiasts. Id leave it alone. taurus are fine. sw maybe better. NAA has some nice little 22s for hideout purposes. |
Re: Revolver in 22LR or 17HMR?
